Video Production 8

The topic of our second project was a commercial. We had to make this shock proof phone commercial in a group. We invented some funny scenes and made a storyboard. Fortunately this time we found some actors, who were pleased to do the movie. On the day of the shooting slowly but we started to talk about the scenes where and how to carry them through. I played the role of a director or director assistant. I explained my point of view to the others, how to work with the camera, and what humorous scenes are possible. Unfortunately I had to leave early from the shooting but I kept in touch with my team members, to make sure it is going well. I think our end result is satisfying it contains humor, but it is simple and great. :)

In the middle of the semester, we took a short break from the producing and shooting. We watched some movies and shared opinions. We watched this horrible movie Santa Sangré, which I couldn't even watch half way through. It was the sickest horrifying thing I've ever seen. Every single moral value was crushed and desecrated. I don't ever want to see that again. I understand that we need to experience many types of movies, art movies and movies that carry a philosophical or symbolical message. Unfortunately I was incapable of understanding the point of this movie. Je suis désolé.

The post-production of my short film included finding the right music. I thought I should find some classical music to match the classical theater styled curtain. I listened to quite a few dozens of music until I finally picked out the 3rd Symphony of Beethoven. After I uploaded my video I added the music in a video editing program which I found a little difficult to deal with. Finally I added the cast list (credits) and the video was complete.

After I made the storyboard and I presented my idea to the teacher, I started the production of my short film. I told all my helpers the idea and how I need to produce it. The idea is a red curtain that looks like a curtain from the theater, however when it opens the truth gets revealed and it turns out that it is a curtain of a window, and the music that can be heard is only the music from the girl's iPod. There are two camera movements a vertical and a zooming movement. I had 2 helpers who handles the curtain opening, one who I explained how the camera should exactly move, and the main character the girl was played by myself. We developed the short film with a tripod which made a fairly clear picture. Several retakes were taken and changes during the shooting, it wasn't an easy task to communicate with my helpers who were inside the building whilst I was sitting outside, and I couldn't see anything inside, plus I was listening to music because of my role, so sometimes I did not hear my phone ringing. I had to run inside the building every now and then to make sure everything is gioing well, and to check on the shoots to see if any retakes need to be done.

Soon we started to work on our first project, the individual short film. We had to invent the idea alone but produce the movies with the help of our classmates. The topic of the short film was" change in perception" which meant that we had to apply the previously learnt camera movements and change the story and the meaning of the motion picture with the zooming and vertical, horizontal camera movements. I first thought of at least 5 different stories which all sounded good at first, but most of them needed to much equipment, and I did not have actors who would help develop my ideas. Although I would have done the acting, but it is hard to the director, actor and the camera man of the movie. And I especially like everything to be perfect as I have a very sensitive eye for photography, and I just feel bad if I don't do the process. Eventually I had to decide on a totally different script, that was easier to produce, and that was on campus.

We learnt how to write storyboards, and had to solve creative tasks like putting together a commercial out of key words. Like squirrel, car chase, gangster, chocolate, siren. etc. We had to make a story board in groups of 3-4 people.

The next few classes we learnt about the process of film making and watched some of our teacher's short films and other works like installations. I found it interesting to watch different kinds of uniquely made shorts and music videos.
